Building Sector Leaders Call for
Steep Energy and Emissions Cuts
On October 5, Architecture 2030 hand-delivered letters to the U.S. Senate from twenty-four of the largest and most influential architecture, engineering, and development firms based in the country, calling for an update to national building code standards to meet steep and achievable energy reduction targets. These firms are responsible for a combined $100 billion in building construction annually.

Hope Resides in the Private Building Sector
The One-Year, 4.5-Million-Jobs Investment Plan 4.5 million new jobs and $280 billion in direct, non-federal investment and spending while opening up a new $45.7 billion renovation market that could grow to almost $1 trillion by 2030. This Plan returns to the federal government twice its investment annually through the new tax base created and can be implemented quickly through existing federal programs. Read More

The effectiveness of the national plan in creating jobs and private spending has prompted these groups to propose a public/private partnership to strategically focus stimulus dollars that will enable a full-scale building industry revival while simultaneously addressing energy and greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Architecture 2030 is leading a campaign to ensure Congress amends Section 241 of the Senate Energy Bill (S. 1462) to provide building energy reduction target dates equivalent to the 2030 Challenge. In a rally for support, Architecture 2030 has drafted a letter to Congress, asking that S. 1462 reflect the same target dates provided in Section 201 of the |
The Senate Bill, passed by the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, currently includes building energy code updates. To be effective, however, the timeline for these targets must be amended to be:
- 30% below the baseline energy code in 2010,
- 50% below the baseline energy code in 2014-2015, and
- 5% additional reduction every three years to 2029-2030.
